The IRS has extended the deadline for filing individual income tax returns until May 17th, 2021. Previously, tax returns were due on April 15th. This gives tax filers an extra month to file their income taxes.
The IRS has also extended other deadlines until May 17th, 2021:
- IRA and Health Savings Account contributions: Filers can make contributions to Individual retirement arrangements (IRAs and Roth IRAs), health savings accounts (HSAs), Archer Medical Savings Accounts (Archer MSAs), and Coverdell education savings accounts (Coverdell ESAs) for the 2020 tax year.
- 2017 unclaimed refunds. If you have not yet filed your taxes or claimed your refund for the 2017 tax year, you can do so until May 17th, 2021. After that date any refunds become property of the US Department of Treasury.
If you will owe money to the IRS for the 2020 tax year, you still must make estimated tax payments by April 15th, 2021, otherwise late fees and penalties may apply.
